Amtrak is reducing its request for federal operating subsidy by 17%, to $373 million, for fiscal 2014.

Amtrak said it is now covering 88% of its direct operating costs, up from 85% last year.

The railroad said it will also request $2 billion for capital improvements and infrastructure maintenance.
