U.S. President Barack Obama nominated Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to serve as Transportation Secretary. The nomination requires Senate confirmation.

Foxx, a Democrat, would replace Republican Ray LaHood, who in January confirmed he would relinquish his post once a successor was found.

According to Obama, Foxx, who on Tuesday will turn 42 years of age, led Charlotte in its efforts to "expand the international airport and extend the city's light-rail system."
