The Federal Aviation Administration has banned all U.S. aircraft from flying in Iraq airspace, which some carriers were already avoiding.

The FAA issued a Notice to Airmen because of armed conflict between militants associated with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and Iraqi security forces and their allies.

American warplanes attacked militant convoys in northern Iraq on Friday in the first significant military operation in the country since U.S. ground troops left Iraq in 2011.

The attack followed President Obama’s announcement Thursday night that he was authorizing air strikes to protect American citizens in Erbil and Baghdad and, at the request of the Iraqi government to help save thousands of Iraqi civilians stranded on a Mount Sinjar without food and water by military action.
