The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) is working with Google to expand the reach of its Hospitality for Hope initiative, which seeks to match emergency and medical personnel in need of temporary housing with hotel rooms during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Under the partnership, essential workers will now be able to find hotels offering free or discounted rooms to Covid-19 responders using Google Search or Google Maps, which will feature a new “Covid-19 responder rooms” filtering tool. Additionally, new messaging will appear at the top of hotel search results in Google Maps or Google.com/travel if properties in the area have special policies for frontline workers.

Hotels can add information on their Covid-19 room availability to their Google business profile in order to surface under the new filter.

In addition to AHLA, Google is working with partners like Choice Hotels International, Hilton and IHG Hotels & Resorts to keep its inventory of properties offering free and discounted rooms up to date.

The new functions are currently active in the U.S. and the U.K., though Google said it plans to expand coverage globally.

According to AHLA, more than 17,000 properties in the U.S. have volunteered rooms under the Hospitality for Hope platform.
