Caesars Entertainment will shut down the 1,300-room Showboat Atlantic City hotel-casino on Aug. 31.

The company cited increased regional competition and the need to protect business at its other Atlantic City properties. Caesars bought Showboat in 1998.

In February, Caesars completed the sale of the Claridge tower next to its Bally's Atlantic City Hotel & Casino.

Caesars shut down the 1,356-room Harrah’s Tunica in northwest Mississippi earlier this month.
