Bally's Corp.'s $1.7 billion Chicago casino development has taken a major step forward, with the company commencing demolition work at a former Chicago Tribune printing plant in the city's River North district.

The progress comes just over a month after Bally's unveiled a refreshed plan for the 30-acre project, which is expected to open in September 2026.

The latest iteration of the Bally's Chicago Casino calls for a 500-room, 34-story hotel tower with a rooftop restaurant bar.

The site will also be home to a casino with 3,300 slot machines, 173 table games and VIP gaming areas; a 3,000-seat theater; multiple restaurants and cafes; a food hall; and a two-acre public park.

Bally's won approval for Chicago's first and only casino license in 2022. When the Bally's Chicago Casino opens, the company will own and/or manage 16 casinos across 11 states,
