Note to hotel owners: Americans really like free Wi-Fi.
The most important amenity for prospective U.S. hotel guests is free wireless Internet access, Expedia's Hotels.com division said, citing its survey of prospective U.S. travelers.
Of those polled, 38% said free Wi-Fi was "a must when choosing hotel accommodations." By comparison, 25% of those surveyed said free breakfast was essential, while 18% chose free parking as the most desired amenity. Room service came in at just 2%.
In fact, the only demographic that didn't have free Wi-Fi as their most desired amenity was the over-60 set, which preferred free breakfast, albeit slightly.
As far as what Hotels.com called "newly offered" amenities, almost half of those polled said wine tastings and happy hours were the most effective way to generate a booking, while airport concierges, pet services and international breakfasts also gained favor.
And for those looking for luxury amenities, the highest percentage of men said high-end fitness centers were a must, while designer toiletries were the perk of choice for women.
