The first Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels in China will open in 2014, said Hyatt Hotels, which reached management agreements for three select-service properties in Shanghai.
The 210-room Hyatt Place Shanghai Jiading and 77-room Hyatt House Shanghai Jiading will open in 2014, while the 150-room Hyatt Place Shanghai Xinjiangwan will debut a year later.
The Jiading hotels will be part of a mixed-use project near Shanghai’s city center.
The hotels “will serve as a showcase for the Hyatt House and Hyatt Place brands as we expand their presence to other Chinese markets to meet the needs of increasing numbers of domestic travelers and affluent Chinese consumers,” said Nong Xia, senior vice president of real estate and development for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts in China.
Hyatt is introducing the select-service brands to a Chinese travel market that has become the world’s second-largest behind the U.S. China saw a 10% growth in travel spending last year and will have $73.8 billion in gross travel bookings in 2012, up 28% from 2009, according to travel research firm PhoCusWright.
Hyatt announced its new Hyatt House brand last month, and said it would reflag all of its Summerfield Suites and Hotel Sierra properties next year. Hyatt House was the name of a Los Angeles hotel the company purchased in 1957 as its first-ever operation.
Hyatt also secured management agreements in China for three Grand Hyatts and five Hyatt Regency hotels, four of which will be in Shanghai. Hyatt currently has four hotels in the city.
The company has 32 hotels under development in China.
