RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico -- InterContinental Hotels Group has signed a deal to operate a Kimpton hotel in Bangkok, the latest in a series of moves to take the boutique brand global.

Tom Rowntree, vice president of IHG's global luxury brands, told reporters about the hotel on Monday at a luncheon sponsored by the company at the International Luxury Travel Market North America show here. More details were to be released Tuesday.

The hotel, he said, will be part of a large mixed-use development. It is scheduled to open in 2020 with 349 guestrooms, Rowntree said.

IHG bought Kimpton, one of America's original luxury boutique brands, in 2015 with the intent of growing it internationally and broadening IHG's luxury portfolio.

Since then, IHG has opened Kimpton properties in Amsterdam and the Cayman Islands and has projects in several other cities, including Paris, Frankfurt, Mexico City and Taipei. It also recently signed an agreement to turn four historic properties in the U.K. into Kimptons.
