MGM partners with Chinese company for resort development

MGM Resorts International has reached an agreement for the China State Construction Engineering Corp. to be its primary contractor for MGM's global projects.

MGM also announced that the state-owned company will be the contractor for MGM's Cotai Strip resort on Macau, which is slated to open in 2016.

“The MGM Cotai is a key project for our company,” MGM Resorts CEO James Murren said in a statement. “We intend to pursue projects with China State not only in Macau and China, but elsewhere around the world.”

MGM has a 25-year lease with the Macau government for about 18 acres of Cotai Strip land. The resort will have 1,600 guestrooms, 500 gaming tables and 2,500 slot machines.

MGM will pay China State about $1.35 billion for the construction contract and will break ground early next year.

China State is the general contractor for the China-financed Baha Mar resort in Nassau, Bahamas. That $3.5 billion, multi-hotel project broke ground in early 2011 and is scheduled to start opening in phases next year.

An operator has yet to be selected for the Baha Mar Casino & Hotel.
