In a statement, Marriott said that Sorenson would continue in his role during treatment. Sorensen is to begin chemotherapy next week, with his medical team expecting him to undergo surgery near the end of this year.

"The cancer was discovered early," said Sorenson in a message to colleagues. "It does not appear to have spread and the medical team -- and I -- are confident that we can realistically aim for a complete cure."

Sorenson, who joined Marriott in 1996, has served as the group's chief executive since 2012.
