Marriott International will join Hilton Worldwide and Starwood Hotels & Resorts in eliminating shark fin from its food service.
Marriott, which in 2012 removed the item from its menus, will institute a complete ban on July 1. Marriott said its use of shark fin is down 80% since the 2012 removal from menus.
Shark fin soup is a delicacy in China.
When finning sharks, fishermen catch them, slice of their fins and throw the sharks back into the water, where they can no longer swim. Finning kills as many as 73 million sharks a year, Pew Environment reports.
Starwood will stop serving shark fin by the end of the year. Hilton in February said its 96 owned and managed properties in the Asia-Pacific region would stop taking new orders for shark fin dishes on April 1, and had stopped taking banquet orders for shark fin on Dec. 1, 2013.
