SYDNEY -- P&O Australian Resorts took over the management of
the 40-room Lizard Island resort. The move followed its purchase
from Qantas of the carrier's sublease interest in the resort for
more than $2 million.
The property, opened in 1975 and previously managed by Qantas'
Australian Resorts, is on the Great Barrier Reef, north of
Cairns.
"This acquisition complements in quality and style the six
products already in our portfolio and further extends our presence
in the premium resort market," said Richard Hein, P&O chairman
and managing director.
He said a "substantial figure" has been allocated for an
extensive renovation of the resort. With seven properties, P&O
is Australia's largest operator of nature-based resorts, Hein
said.
P&O's other Queensland resorts are:
The 108-room Brampton Island, at the mouth of the Whitsunday
Passage, 20 miles north of Mackay.Dunk Island, with 148 rooms, off the coast halfway between
Townsville and Cairns, and Bederra Island, with 15 villa units,
located south of Dunk Island.Heron Island, with 116 rooms, on the Great Barrier Reef.Silky Oaks Lodge, with 60 chalets, at Daintree National
Park. The company also has Cradle Mountain Lodge, with 98 cabins at
