Peter Island Resort in the British Virgin Islands will remain closed late into next year, requiring the time to repair hurricane damage.

"Damage assessments are still underway from Hurricane Irma and Maria, and like many similarly situated properties, we unfortunately have to share that the resort will remain closed into late 2018," the resort said.

The 52-suite resort is the only resort on the 1,800-acre Peter Island, the largest private island in the 50-island BVI chain. Visitors arrive via a 30-minute boat ride from Tortola.

The closure due to hurricane damage is not a first for the resort. It was closed for eight months due to damage from Hurricane Georges in 1998.
