Casa Palopo's pool deck.
Casa Palopo, a private home-turned-boutique hotel overlooking Guatemala's Lake Atitlan, is the first Relais & Chateaux property in the country and only the second in Central America.
Each of the hotel's seven guestrooms offers stucco walls, original Latin American artworks, handcrafted furniture and private terraces with views of the lake and three volcanoes across the shore.
The two-bedroom Villa Palopo above the main hotel includes a living room, dining room, full kitchen and a private infinity pool with roofed lounge space and a wood-burning fireplace.
The in-house restaurant, 6.8 Palopo, offers al fresco dining overseen by chef and sommelier Marcela Jongezoon Bosch.
Facilities also include a Balinese-style spa, solar heated pool and pool deck, library and fitness room.
Casa Palopo originally was built as a private home, became a boutique hotel in 2000 and was purchased by its present owner, Guatemalan Claudia Bosch, in 2010.
