The Aloft hotel in Cupertino Calif., this month will put into service what Starwood Hotels & Resorts calls the industry’s first robotic butler.

The device, called a Botlr, will make its debut at the 123-room hotel on Aug. 20. It is about 3 feet tall and on rollers, and its stature and beeping sounds appear to be inspired by R2-D2 of Star Wars fame.

The device will be able to transport small items from the front desk to hotel rooms via technology that allows it to open and close elevator doors, choose the proper floor and notify the guest via phone call when it has arrived at the hotel room.

The Botlr was produced by Savioke, a company based in nearby Sunnyvale.
