Sol Melia heads to Cancun to open second ME by Melia property

Sol Melia has renovated and refashioned its Melia Turquesa property in Cancun, Mexico, and redubbed it the ME Cancun, marking the debut of the new ME by Melia lifestyle brand in the Americas.

Sol Melia introduced its ME by Melia brand in October with the opening of the 192-room ME Madrid, Reina Victoria in Madrid's Plaza de Santa Ana.

According to Sol Melia, the company described the new chain as a "daring, bold hotel concept ... characterized by passion for service, design, international fusion cuisine and world music.

Andre Gerondeau, executive vice president, North America and the Caribbean for Sol Melia Hotels & Resorts, said the Cancun property follows in a similar mold.

"As the first property in the Americas under our new brand ME by Melia, the ME Cancun is a hugely exciting addition to our existing portfolio of hotels in this region," Gerondeau said. "We are now in a position to target a very distinctive audience, which compliments our global brand strategy."

The ME Cancun has undergone an extensive transformation prior to its opening.

Each of the 448 guest rooms -- including 32 Loft suites, four Level suites and four Passion suites -- offer ocean or lagoon views. All of the rooms have been refurbished by architect Alvaro Sans in collaboration with the Mexico-based architectural firm Interarq, designer Rebecca Perez, and celebrated Mexican artist, Yuri Zatarain.

Rooms feature rich colors with custom-made wood and stone furniture by Zatarain.

And like its sister property in Madrid, the ME Cancun also features such brand hallmarks as high-speed Internet access; DVD players with a 32-inch plasma-screen TV; surround-sound speakers; an extensive DVD library; and iPod adaptors and connectivity docking stations.

Additionally, beds boast 300-thread-count linens and a down pillow-top mattress and rooms come with organic, all natural products by AVEDA.

Along with a spa, a swimming pool, meetings space and a banquet hall, the ME Cancun features several nightspots, lounges and restaurants.

"Like all ME properties, this hotel will deliver cutting-edge design, high-octane nightlife and personalized service -- it's also a very exciting time to be opening a hotel of this caliber against the backdrop of one of the world's most beautiful destinations, said Guy Hensley, ME by Melias senior vice president of operations.
