Educational tour company promotes offerings to travel trade

EastWest International Tours, a Laguna Beach, Calif.-based niche tour operator founded by a university professor in 1978, is expanding its operations and offering its programs through travel agents for the first time.

Robert Feldman, a former professor of history and Russian studies at Cal State University in Fullerton, Calif., started leading tours in response to requests from friends, students and colleagues after he returned from a six-month stay in Moscow.

Feldman started leading tour groups to Russia and soon he was leading several trips a year. As the operation evolved, he started expanding the destinations of the tours and bringing in other professors who were experts in other areas.

EastWest is a very limited operation. It offers each itinerary just one time a year with departures to Africa, China, Europe (two itineraries), Russia, South America and Southeast Asia; departures are limited to between 18 and 25 participants.

In 2007, prices range from $2,590 to $6,490, per person, double, including air fare at the destination; lectures and discussions; luxury or best available accommodations; breakfast daily and most lunches and dinners; comprehensive sightseeing with English-speaking guides; entrance fees; and taxes. The programs are commissionable to travel agents at 10%.
