EastWest International Tours, a Laguna
Beach, Calif.-based niche tour operator founded by a university
professor in 1978, is expanding its operations and offering its
programs through travel agents for the first time.
Robert Feldman, a
former professor of history and Russian studies at Cal State
University in Fullerton, Calif., started leading tours in response
to requests from friends, students and colleagues after he returned
from a six-month stay in Moscow.

a year. As the operation evolved, he started expanding the
destinations of the tours and bringing in other professors who were
experts in other areas.
EastWest is a very
limited operation. It offers each itinerary just one time a year
with departures to Africa, China, Europe (two itineraries), Russia,
South America and Southeast Asia; departures are limited to between
18 and 25 participants.
In 2007, prices
range from $2,590 to $6,490, per person, double, including air fare
at the destination; lectures and discussions; luxury or best
available accommodations; breakfast daily and most lunches and
dinners; comprehensive sightseeing with English-speaking guides;
entrance fees; and taxes. The programs are commissionable to travel
agents at 10%.
