NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Tahiti Legends, a new wholesaler, entered the Tahiti market.

Formed early this year by Alain Bernard, president, it is about to introduce its first product line, which it details in a 44-page brochure.

The company is marketing several packages.

Using Parkroyal properties and offering introductory 15% commissions, it has been faxing the package information to agents.

"We will try to share our passion for Tahiti and, with an experienced staff, we pride ourselves on being able to arrange any Tahiti itinerary," said Bernard, who formerly was president of Los Angeles-based Islands in the Sun.

The brochure, he said, provides detailed information on French Polynesia.

Also, he said, it will contain commissionable activities for agents to presell, which is unusual in the Tahiti market.

Options will include four-wheel-drive tours, a Tahiti circle-island tour, scuba on five islands, and wedding and vows- renewal ceremonies.

Packages already on the market feature two- and three-island options, in conjunction with Air New Zealand and Air France.

Prices and the 15% commission are valid for stays through May 31.

Rates start at $1,289 for a seven-night Moorea/Tahiti combination, with accommodations at Parkroyal hotels and air from Los Angeles.

The new brochure features more than 30 properties on seven islands and two other air carriers: AOM French Airlines and Corsair.

Also listed are a choice of seven inclusive packages, with meals and sightseeing, and cruise and honeymoon options.

Lead prices on year-round packages are $759 for seven nights with air from Los Angeles (Cook's Bay on Moorea and the Royal Tahitian in Papeete are lead properties).

Ruth Zimmerman, formerly Islands in the Sun's vice president, is executive vice president of Tahiti Legends.

Bernard left Islands in the Sun, where he was president for seven years, last September, following its sale.

Islands merged with ATS Tours in 1993, with Accor holding a majority interest.

The company became ATS Tours/Islands in the Sun, with each entity headed by a president and retaining its identity.

Last August, Accor sold its 55% interest.
