American Express Travel bookings jumped 50% in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the fourth quarter of 2020.

The agency reported that longer trips are returning. According to a survey conducted in mid-April, 66% of respondents plan to take one- or two-week trips for their next vacation.

Most respondents (28%) said their next leisure trip will be to a place they’ve traveled to in the past and that they are comfortable in. Another 19% will head somewhere within driving distance, while 15% will visit somewhere they’ve never been. Eleven percent are interested in traveling somewhere they’ve dreamed about during the past year, and 9% plan to travel internationally. Six percent will head somewhere they can completely disconnect, while 5% will visit a destination that relies on tourism for the local economy. The remaining 4% will go elsewhere.

Outdoor destinations remain popular, according to American Express Travel.

Travelers also appear to be booking during less busy times. According to the survey results, nearly half of respondents are planning on traveling on adjacent weekends to Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day to avoid crowds.

The survey was conducted by Morning Consult from April 13-15 among 2,000 respondents who had a household income of at least $70,000. Respondents also traveled by air at least once in 2019.
