PLEASANTON, Calif. -- The Honeymoon & Romantic Getaways Show and Conference with Great Spas of the World will feature a panel discussion led by Valarie D'Elia, who hosts "The Travel Show" on the WOR Radio Network and "Travel with Val" on NY1 News.

The trade show will be held at Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif., Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 and is sponsored in part by Travel Weekly.

D'Elia is a fourth-generation travel professional who stamped brochures at her family's travel agency when she was 5 years old. She worked as an agent in high school in the afternoons after school.

Her family tradition of travel dates to 1902, when her great-grandfather came from Italy and opened a bar in Bridgeport, Conn., which evolved into a travel agency when people came to him for his knowledge of travel.

"He became known as someone who knew how," she said. "He ticketed people in steerage class to make the transatlantic journey."

D'Elia's grandfather and father continued to grow the agency, and her mother still works as a travel agent. D'Elia considers her work in broadcasting an extension of her work as an agent, as she makes a living from travel expertise.

"The travel industry has become a tough business today," she said. "You have to put a price on your expertise."

D'Elia will share her expertise on romantic travel in the panel discussion, "The Peso Payoff: Romance and Honeymoons South of the Border, and Beyond to Latin America."

Agents always will be needed for weddings and romantic vacations, D'Elia said. "If you have a big group, you're not going to want to go on the Internet.

"And your honeymoon is the one big vacation in your life. I don't think [clients] want to take a chance on their honeymoon."
