International travel is in for a good run this summer, as data and trends from both American Express Travel and TripAdvisor point to an upswing in travel abroad from June 1 through Aug. 31.
TripAdvisor's Summer Vacation Value Report indicated that six of the top 10 destinations for U.S. travel this summer are outside the U.S.
"Travelers appear eager to take advantage of the strong U.S. dollar by planning trips abroad," said Brooke Ferencsik, TripAdvisor communications director.
According to TripAdvisor, the top summer destination is Las Vegas, followed by Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Orlando; Cancun; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Paris; New York City; London; Playa del Carmen, Mexico; and Rome.
The top destinations by region for American Express Travel are Iceland, Japan, the Czech Republic, eastern Canada, Portugal, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, western Canada, the northwestern U.S. and the Bahamas.
The top 10 city destinations as reported by American Express Travel are Reykjavik; Incheon, South Korea; Puerto Vallarta; Chicago; Prague; Montreal; Zurich; Milan; Lisbon, and Panama City, Panama.
The least expensive time to travel is the end of August, when prices tend to dip below the summer peak, according to TripAdvisor. That advice holds for nine of its top 10 destinations except for Las Vegas, when the week of June 1 through 7 appears to be the cheapest in terms of airfare, a seven-night hotel stay and three restaurant meals a day.
Trending this summer are longer babymoons for expectant parents, an increase in milestone celebrations abroad and an upswing in longer romantic escapes for millennial couples, who are seeking more guidance and trip-planning from travel advisers, according to American Express Travel.
