Obituary: Jane Daly Chapin Fontana, 85

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jane Daly Chapin Fontana, a travel agent pioneer in selling African safaris and other adventure travel, died here at the age of 85.

Fontana opened Adventures Unlimited in 1965 in the original Abercrombie & Fitch store in New York and opened a branch of the agency in San Francisco in 1968.

In 1981, she closed the New York branch but retained a nationwide clientele of sophisticated travelers. She also had a close relationship with Abercrombie & Kent, the tour operator, providing input for new tours and sending the company its first clients.

"She gave A & K the idea to start private tented safaris because she knew it would be popular among consumers," said Joyce Small, who bought Adventures Unlimited from Fontana two years ago after working there for 30 years. "She was really ahead of her time in selling adventure travel."
