Price is the primary decision-driver for students when booking their travel, according to a survey released by StudentUniverse, a Boston-based travel-booking service.

Most young travelers would sacrifice time and convenience for a bargain, according to the survey, which found that price is the primary concern for more than 90% of students when booking travel, and that 65% of students would take a flight with one or more stops to save money when direct or nonstop options are available.

Additionally, 60% of students would fly to a less convenient airport to save money, and 71% would sacrifice convenience for savings of between $50 and $100.

Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that 64% of student and youth travelers reported that they are paying for their travel themselves, according to the poll of nearly 5,000 student travelers.

"Students look for cost savings opportunities, but they don't just book the cheapest flight," stated Rebecca Heidgerd, director of marketing for StudentUniverse. "More than ever consumers are educated and looking closely at exactly what they will be getting for their money."

When it comes to researching and booking travel, student and youth travelers are definitely searching for travel on their mobile apps, but they are still booking on a desktop -- 22% of students search on mobile, but 72% of students don't end up booking on mobile.

Once they get to their destination, 41% of students are looking for opportunities to get off the beaten path and have authentic experiences. Fewer than 4% of respondents said that checking out bars and clubs were their top priority when traveling. A quarter of those surveyed said they prefer to stay in Airbnb accommodations when traveling.

Owned by Flight Centre Travel, StudentUniverse provides flight, hotel and tour bookings for student and youth travelers.
