Amadeus today issued a statement in support of Expedia's complaint against Google filed in late March with the European Commission.
Expedia's complaint alleged that Google engages in business practices that violate European Union competition and consumer-protection laws.
Amadeus said that it has been "carefully considering the impact of recent developments and listening to the understandable concerns of those affected -- in particular online travel agencies" and said that Amadeus shares the same concerns as Expedia.
"It is critical to ensure that Google Flight Search does not mislead consumers into believing that Google offers comprehensive and neutral results, whereas in fact they may be biased, favoring Google's own services even if they are of a lower quality and an even higher price than other services offered by independent travel distributors," Amadeus said. "It also leads to consumers potentially missing out on the best price available in the market and limits fair competition between airlines."
Expedia said that its complaint "offers evidence of how Google's conduct harms not only competition, but consumers. Expedia believes that strong action is needed by the European Commission to restore a fair and competitive marketplace in online search that respects consumers' rights."
Google responded in a statement last week that it had not seen the complaint, "but we've been working to explain how our business works, cooperating with the European Commission since this investigation began. Because there's always room for improvement, we're happy to discuss any concerns the Commission might have."
