Agents recommend Scandinavian eateries

NEW YORK -- Travelers in search of electrifying restaurants in Helsinki and Copenhagen might want to try the following agent-recommended eateries.

  • Lisa Long, marketing manager for Norvista Travel Services in New York, dines at the Restaurant Hariton or Restaurant Volga when in Helsinki. Run by a Finnish chef who spent time at the Savoy hotel in Moscow, the neighboring restaurants are decked out with Russian art and furniture.
  • The Hariton is the more formal of the two, while the "more Russian-looking, more fantastical" Volga is set around a "bizarre papier-mache tree," Long said.

Each serves its own specialties of Finnish-influenced Russian fare. At Volga, it's pelmeni -- Russian gnocchi in sour cream and butter.

At Hariton, Long favors the Mushroom Julienne appetizer of diced mushrooms in sour cream sauce.

Dinner at each, with wine, costs about $100 per person.

The restaurants are located on Kasarmikatu 44 in the center of town, not far from the market square and harbor.

  • For a splurge in Copenhagen, Krogs Fiskerestaurant is "definitely worth it," said Tina Davis of Weco-Travel Inc., a BTI Americas Partner agency in Columbia, Md.
  • Davis, who is Danish, has dined at this formal seafood restaurant for years. "Something everyone should try while in Copenhagen is lun fiskefillet med remoulade paa rugbroed -- a warm, fried fish fillet with a cold dressing on native rye bread," she said. "A cold glass of chablis is very nice with this dish."

Krogs fans also rave about the bouillabaisse, a French seafood soup, she said.

The restaurant faces a canal on Gammel Strand, one block from Stroeget, the city's main walking street.
