The Cayman Islands' antismoking law will not take effect until May 31, when health officials plan to introduce the legislation on World No Tobacco Day.
World No Tobacco Day was created by the World Health Organization in 1987 and seeks to draw attention to problems created by the use of tobacco.
The Cayman Islands bill was passed in October and was quickly approved by the governor.
Provisions in the bill make it illegal to smoke in public, including parking lots, parks and beaches.
Some restaurant owners have said they will inaugurate their own smoking bans well before the May 31 date.
Al Fisher, owner of Seven Mile Beach’s Lone Star Cafe, has vowed to introduce an indoor-restaurant ban by the end of the month.
