Carnival and Princess ban stateroom smoking

Starting Dec. 1, Carnival Cruise Lines passengers won’t be allowed to smoke in their staterooms, but passengers will be permitted to smoke on their balconies.

Spa staterooms on the Splendor, Dream and Magic will continue to remain smoke-free, including on the balconies.

Sister cruise line Princess won't allow smoking in staterooms or on balconies, starting Jan. 15.

"Our consumer studies now show that smokers are a small minority of our passengers, and that the large majority of passengersvalue having their primary living space onboard smoke-free," said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises’ executive vice president.

Swartz said Princess included balconies in the new policy because they are a hallmark feature of Princess ships, and that it's important to keep that "peaceful space clear of smoke."

Princess will continue to provide spaces for smokers. Smoking will continue to be allowed in the Churchill's cigar lounge, a section of the disco and casino, and a portion of the open decks.

On June 15, Carnival Cruise Lines will restrict smoking to the dance clubs, designated areas within the casino and casino bar, certain sections on the open decks on all vessels and in the jazz clubs on the following ships: Triumph, Victory, Spirit, Pride, Legend, Miracle, Conquest, Glory, Valor, Liberty, Freedom and Splendor.

On other vessels in Carnival's fleet, smoking will be permitted in designated areas on deck.
