Engine-room fire halts Princess cruise

By Jerry Limone

A fire in the Royal Princess' engine room has disrupted the ship's 12-day sailing from Civitavecchia, Italy, to Athens.

The fire occurred on Thursday, the fifth day of the cruise. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The fire broke out at about 8:10 p.m. local time, soon after the ship left Port Said, Egypt. Princess Cruises said passengers were called to their emergency muster stations and the fire was extinguished.

All 733 passengers and 393 crew members were accounted for, Princess said.

The ship dropped anchor five miles from Port Said and was scheduled to head back to the port today. Princess said technical experts and regulatory authorities would inspect the ship, with a full assessment scheduled to be completed by Saturday.

Princess said it would offer tours from Port Said.

"Once the assessment is complete, we will have an understanding of how the remainder of the cruise, or any future sailing, will be affected, and also what compensation we will be offering to passengers," Princess stated.
