Holland America ship turned away from Costa Rica port

By Johanna Jainchill

A Holland America Line ship was turned away from Limón, Costa Rica, due to a dockworkers strike.

The strike also has prevented cargo ships from delivering food and supplies for three days.

According to Costa Rica’s English-language newspaper Tico Times, cargo ships have been unable to dock since Tuesday.

Another publication, InsideCostaRica.com, quoted the Costa Rica President Rodrigo Arias as saying that the loss of the cruise ship, the 1,848-passenger Zuiderdam, would cost the local economy about $175,000 in spending on taxis, food, crafts and other purchases.

According to the report, the conflict between the presidential administration and dockworkers in Limón over wages has been ongoing.

On Tuesday, the report said, workers began a protest for higher pay and proceeded to block three outgoing ships in Moín and two in Limón.

Holland America Line said the ship stayed at sea and will return to Fort Lauderdale as planned on Oct. 24.

The line also said it plans to continue calling in Limón, and that its next call there is on Oct. 31.
