Shipbuilder Meyer Werft has quietly implemented “restrictions” at its shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, following a suspected act of vandalism that caused water damage to the Disney Fantasy, which is under construction at the yard.
A shipyard spokesman said the company’s safety-management department tightened access to the ship after the incident, which happened in early December. He said that about 6,000 people are working on the ship.
A spokeswoman for Disney Cruise Line said that local media reports in Germany were “way overblown,” and that there was “some water damage, not significant, that will require replacement of carpeting.”
German media reports stated that vandals opened the ship’s water valves, and that repairs would cost about $1.2 million. The Disney spokeswoman said that neither Disney nor the shipyard had released any dollar amount. She declined to say how much repairs would cost.
There will be no delays in the ship’s delivery schedule, according to Meyer Werft and Disney. The 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy is due to be delivered sometime in February and will sail its maiden voyage from Port Canaveral, Fla., in March.
Meyer Werft owns and insures the ship until Disney takes delivery.
