Airberlin, Germany’s second largest airline, is sticking to its
planned summer schedule despite the delayed opening of the Berlin
Brandenburg Airport.
The carrier adapted its flight schedule to the old infrastructure at
Tegel, which is remaining open until Brandenburg is ready, but the
adaptation required rescheduling and slot changes, Airberlin CEO Hartmut
Mehdorn said. He added that numerous processes, such as loading
luggage, which are automated at the new Brandenburg Airport, have to be
done by hand at Tegel.
“The workload for our employees is enormous,” Mehdorn said. “We are
confident, however, that we will cope with this additional challenge.”
The new flight schedule, which kicked off May 1, has been increased to
1,500 departures and arrivals per week, representing an 8% boost in
capacity.
