Modern Honolulu names new G.M.

By Shane Nelson
Officials at Waikiki’s 353-room Modern Honolulu named Vittal Calamur general manager.

Beginning in 2007, Calamur participated in the initial development of the luxury boutique property as the Waikiki Edition, a partnership between Marriott and New York-based hotelier Ian Schrager, before helping the hotel’s ownership transfer management to Aqua Hotels & Resorts in 2011.

“I look forward to leading the Modern Honolulu team and am confident that our employees are committed to ensuring the property’s success,” Calamur said in a statement. “Concepting and engineering the property’s transformation, as part of the ownership’s asset management team during its hard-hat days, has been an incredible experience. There is nowhere else in the world that defines community and teamwork quite like Hawaii.”

Calamur broke into the industry at the Westin Renaissance Center in Detroit and later spent significant time on the W Hotel brand, helping to grow the company’s property total from two to 18. He also opened the Keating, the first hotel by Pininfarina, and Tower23 Hotel, both in San Diego.
