Drug violence occurs near Puerto Vallarta but not in tourist areas

Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and other areas in the state of Jalisco experienced disturbances on May 1 due to retaliation by a drug cartel for the arrest of a drug lord.

Several buses and cars were burned, but the incidents did not take place in the tourist zones of either city but on the outskirts on the road between the two cities, which are about 180 miles apart.

Tourists were not impacted, and state police handled the situation swiftly.

"No harm has come to any citizen or visitors; peace was restored within hours and no further events have occurred since then," according to a statement from Agustin Alvarez, director of tourism for Puerto Vallarta.

Guadalajara officials had the same message.

Neither city appeared on the latest travel advisory issued by the U.S. State Department on April 13.
