The Riviera Nayarit has taken the lead in clean beach destinations within Mexico, having 10 out of a total of 31 certified clean beaches in nine states.
The Mexican Institute of Normalizacion y Certificacion certified four new beaches on June 26 during the 10th Clean Beach Conference in Puerto Vallarta.
The four new beaches are in Punta Mita, Banderas Bay, Compostela and San Blas.
The other six beaches are in Sayulita, Nuevo Vallarta (three), Bucerias and Compostela.
Quintano Roo, where Cancun is located, is in second place with five certified clean beaches.
The certifications are based on guidelines established by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
Procedures ensure that the beaches comply with standards for the quality of water, safety, sustainability, environmental safety and the protection of wildlife.
