Three boutique hotels in San Miguel de Allende have partnered to present the Smart arts festival scheduled for June 1 to 3.
Hotel Matilda, Dos Casas and L’Otel have planned a number of special events that include exhibits of four contemporary Mexican artists, a dance party, tequila tastings, hot air balloon rides and a private tour of Atotonilco Church, a historic pilgrimage site known for its murals.
“San Miguel de Allende has always been an art-centered destination, but Smart is unlike anything that has been offered before,” said Hotel Matilda General Manager Bruce James.
“We are transcending the typical art exhibit by mixing in cultural elements and fun activities to build a multimedia experience that taps today’s buzz,” he said.
The featured artists include Jose Cuevas, a modern painter known for murals and sculptures; Aldo Chaparro, an artist who blends art with other disciplines, including music, industrial design and writing; Manuel Cerda, a controversial, cutting-edge artist whose work is a commentary on provocative topics of the day, and Spencer Tunick, who documents the live nude figure in public through mass installations that he photographs (his most famous shot shows 18,000 nudes in Mexico City’s main marketplace).
All three hotels are offering a package to tie in with the festival. Rates are $250 per night, double, plus service and taxes, with a two-night minimum-stay requirement. All festival activities are included.
