Northstar Travel Media acquires five Nielsen publications

By Jerry Limone

Northstar Travel Media, parent of Travel Weekly, has acquired five publications from the Nielsen Co.'s Business Media Travel Group.

The brands are Business Travel News, Successful Meetings, Meeting News, Incentive and MiMegasite, an online portal serving the meetings industry.

"The addition of the Nielsen brands greatly enhances our competitive leadership positions in the travel and meetings industries, and extends our reach into important complementary segments of corporate travel and the motivation and incentive markets," said Thomas Kemp, Northstar's chairman and CEO.

"We are investing in our core markets at a time of cyclical weakness because of our confidence in the long-term growth and size of the global travel and meetings industries."

This is the second acquisition that Northstar has announced this year. In January, the company acquired the Home Based Travel Agent trade show.

The Home Based Travel Agent event will co-locate with Travel Weekly's CruiseWorld 2010, a new show, in Fort Lauderdale, April 14 to 17.

"We are actively investing in our core markets through organic initiatives and strategic acquisitions that offer our customers a broader range of information and marketing channels," said Kemp. "We expect further expansion in 2010."
