American Airlines is extending the fee it charges for unaccompanied minors to include children up to 14 years old. The change takes effect Sept. 3.

American currently charges a $150 fee for unaccompanied minors between the ages of 5 and 11.

The airline said the new age range "ensures the safest possible travel for our youngest customers and is consistent with the US Airways policy in effect before the close of our merger."

US Airways does not allow unaccompanied minors to travel on connecting flights, but that service will be offered to passengers between ages 8 and 14 in the coming months, according to American.

For tickets purchased prior to Sept. 3, passengers ages 12 to 14 who are traveling alone will receive the unaccompanied minor service free of charge.

All major U.S. carriers charge a fee for unaccompanied minors. Fees vary.

Delta charges $100 each way for an unaccompanied minors ages 5 to 14, with an option to buy the service those ages 15 to 17. Southwest charges $50 each way for passengers ages 5 to 11. JetBlue charges $100 each way for passengers ages 5 to 13. United charges $150 each way for kids ages 5 to 11.
