American introduces one-way mileage awards

By Rebecca Tobin

American is allowing customers to trade in miles for one-way tickets, a move that the carrier said was an industry first.

One-Way Flex Awards can be redeemed at half the points of roundtrip MileSAAver or AAnytime rewards.

"Maybe you’re planning to fly one way and drive the other," American said. "Or you just don’t have a return date."

American offered examples of how the miles could be redeemed. If an outbound flight is more flexible than the return, a passenger could use the more restrictive but less expensive one-way MileSAAver award on the outbound and a one-way AAnytime award on the return portion.

American also revamped its AAdvantage mileage booking tool on AA.com. The site now includes a calendar that enables AAdvantage members to select different award types or service classes for each portion of a trip.

Members can also book multicity itineraries for award travel.
