Canadian carriers, tour operators suspend service to Mexico

Canadian airlines and tour operators in Europe have temporarily suspended service to Mexico because of the swine flu outbreak.

Air Canada suspended flights to Cancun, Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta until June 1, but is maintaining service to Mexico City and has waived change fees until May 6.

Another Canadian airline, WestJet, will stop service to Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, effective May 4. Service to all but Cancun will resume on June 20. Cancun, a seasonal destination for WestJet, will return in the fall.

Montreal-based tour operator Transat AT suspended Mexico flights until June 1 and is bringing customers and employees now in Mexico back to Canada.

Argentina banned all Mexico flights through May 4, joining Cuba, which announced a 48-hour halt on all air travel to and from Mexico on Tuesday.

In the U.K., tour operators Thomson, First Choice and Thomas Cook canceled all flights to Mexico until May 7 and are flying customers already in Mexico back to the U.K.

Switzerland-based operator Kuoni suspended Mexico operations until May 4, and Monarch Airlines suspended its Cancun flights from London until May 8.

British Airways continues to operate Mexico flights.

Lufthansa reported that cancellations to Mexico have risen, and that planes leaving Mexico are “completely full” as travelers flee the country, according to spokeswoman Jennifer Urbaniak.

France will reportedly ask the European Union to suspend all flights from EU countries to Mexico.
