IATA economist predicts further decline in passenger traffic

By Michael Fabey

Commercial airlines have not yet hit bottom for passenger traffic demand, IATA Chief Economist Brian Pearce said this week.

Passenger traffic will dip even further this year, Pearce said in a March 30 briefing with reporters.

He predicted a further decline by about 6% this year.

To help most airlines from falling victim to the global recession, he said, governments still have to be financially proactive. "We need to see more economic stimulus," he said.

That will help provide a better credit environment, he said, prompting people to spend more for travel.
