Mexicana Airlines is returning even more aircraft to creditors and cutting more flights.
Mexicana will return 27 Airbus narrowbodies to three leasing companies, which amounts to 42% of its leased fleet. The carrier's remaining fleet of leased A319s, A320s, A330s and Boeing 767s (as well as nine A320s owned by the carrier) will remain in Mexicana’s fleet, Aviation Daily reported.
The airline will return 12 aircraft to GE Capital Aviation Services, including all 10 of the Airbus A318s currently operated by the carrier as well as two A320s.
Mexicana said it is curtailing a series of additional flights starting today.
"No destinations will be canceled as a result of the changes, although fewer flights will be available on certain routes," the airline said.
Most changes involve domestic service, although the list includes flights from Mexico City to both Dallas and Miami.
According to bankruptcy court papers, Mexicana agreed to exempt a $123.6 million loan deal from Banco Mercantil del Norte from the airline’s Chapter 15 protection request to shield creditors from trying to seize assets or halt contracts.
The airline also detailed special short-term payment plans to the court for companies that provide fuel and other services.
