Eurostar suspends service

By Jerry Limone

Eurostar said it would not operate service on Monday after the malfunction of trains over the weekend stranded thousands of passengers traveling between France and England.

According to reports, five trains broke down in the Channel Tunnel simultaneously on Friday. Trains also broke down on Saturday, forcing a suspension of Sunday service.

Multiple trains broke down because snow accumulated on power cars while in France, then melted while trains were in the tunnel. The melting snow damaged electrical equipment, said Eurostar.

"We now know that we need to further enhance the snow screens and snow shields in the power cars of the trains," Eurostar said.

"We have already started making the modifications and to ensure that these new protection measures work effectively, we are conducting a further series of test runs tomorrow."

Eurostar said passengers can claim a refund or change their booking for free through their original point of sale up to two months after the original date of travel.

For customers who have been unable to travel over the last few days, Eurostar said it will cover the cost of out-of pocket expenses such as hotels and taxis.
