Developers complete first phase of Grand Cayman resort

By Gay Nagle Myers

The Riviera, Grand Cayman has completed its first phase of reconstruction.

The hotel is located on the site of the former Casa Bertmar/Coconut Harbor, a dive hotel that never reopened after Hurricane Michelle severely damaged it in 2001.

The beachfront Riviera, near George Town on South Sound, will offer 58 units when completed in fall 2011, according to the developers. The units will be a combination of studios and one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

Studios and one-bedroom units from the old Coconut Harbor already have been refurbished. The units will be rented out until all renovations are finished.

Larger units will be completed in a second phase of development.

Resort facilities will include a restaurant, two bars, a pool, a gym and spa, a business center and a dive operation.

All of the units are for sale as vacation residences. Units will be available to owners for up to six weeks a year and to renters for the rest of the year.
