By Danny King
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts will start operations in India next month, when the Fairmont Jaipur debuts Aug. 9.

The 255-room newbuild will include 60,000 square feet of meeting space. A 14,000-square-foot spa is expected to open in the next few months.

Jaipur, known as the “Pink City,” is home to about 3 million people. The city is located in north-central India, about 150 miles southwest of New Delhi.

Several hotel companies are debuting or expanding operations in India because of increases in both domestic travel within th ecountry and international visits to India.

Between 2006 and 2011, the number of India’s annual domestic and international travelers increased 74% and 39%, respectively, according to a report that research firm HVS published in March. HVS forecasted that India would need to double its room supply to more than 350,000 rooms during the next decade to accommodate increased tourism.
