Sandals in pursuit of property on Anguilla

NEW YORK -- John Lynch, Sandals and Beaches Resorts' executive vice president, sales worldwide, said Sandals is negotiating to buy an existing property on Anguilla, which looks to be another huge renovation project if a deal is made.

According to Lynch, the chain already is spending $8 million to $10 million to enhance the former Hyatt on St. Lucia, which opens as the Sandals Grande St. Lucian Aug. 15, and $30 million to $32 million to renovate the former Boscobel Beach hotel, which will open July 1 as the Beaches Boscobel east of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Ironically, the family-oriented Boscobel resort, run by SuperClubs from 1983 until 2000, was built as a Playboy Club, Lynch said. Hence, "the rooms are enormous, built when people could easily afford these huge rooms. So it's a fine family resort."
