Trump to redevelop federal building into D.C. hotel

Washington-OldPostOfficeBuildingThe federal government has chosen the Trump Organization to redevelop the Old Post Office Pavilion in Washington into a hotel.

Trump also will brand and operate the hotel, but the federal government will continue to own the building.

Colony Capital  partnered with Trump on the proposal and will co-invest in the project. Colony is an owner of the Fairmont, Swissotel and Raffles hotel brands.

The redeveloped property will be called Trump International Hotel, the Old Post Office, Washington, D.C.

Plans call for 250 large guestrooms, restaurants, extensive meeting facilities, a spa, a library, a curated museum, an exhibition gallery and indoor and outdoor gardens. Trump plans to preserve the building’s structure.

The Old Post Office, located at Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street, used to house federal office space. In 2008, Congress directed the General Services Administration (GSA) to enter into a long-term lease for private-sector development and restoration.

In a statement, the GSA said, “After closely evaluating the submissions, GSA determined the Trump Organization proposal represented the strongest development team, best long-term potential for the local community, and most consistent stream of revenue for the federal government.”

Hilton was one of Trump’s competitors in the bid process, proposing to redevelop the federal building into a Waldorf Astoria hotel.
