By Michelle Baran

Kids at Peruvian schoolAs part of its growing voluntourism program, International Expeditions has added a nine-day trip to the Peruvian Amazon for 2010.

International Expeditions has existing voluntourism trips for the Galapagos Islands, Kenya, India and Laos.

The Peru projects vary and can include assisting in a kindergarten classroom, working on a local teaching garden or working in a nature reserve.

The itineraries combine four days of volunteer work with four days of sightseeing in the Peruvian Amazon.

During the sightseeing portion of the trip, guests stay at the Ceiba Tops Lodge in the Amazon. All rooms at the lodge have air conditioning, private bath and hot water. The property also has a swimming pool and spa.

The sightseeing includes a village visit, rainforest excursions and fishing for piranhas.

Volunteer projects can be added to International Expedition's existing Amazon Voyage and Machu Picchu itineraries in Peru or to a custom Peru tour.

The Peru voluntourism trip starts at $1,898 (not including air), with the traveler's volunteer project receiving $250 of the total.
