After severe flooding in southern Peru, train service to Machu Picchu will be suspended for up to two months, according to reports.
"Clearing the southern railway that runs to Machu Picchu will take some seven weeks at least," Armando Pareja, head of PeruRail, told Reuters.
PeruRail operates the train that tourists ride to get to the ancient Incan site.
Authorities told news agencies that the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu will likely remain closed for several weeks until the surrounding highways and railroad tracks are repaired.
On Friday, the evacuation of thousands of tourists that had been stranded for days by mudslides and flooding near Machu Picchu was completed. According to reports, the floods have killed 20 people.
A five-day deluge of rain finally slowed last Wednesday after damaging some 4,600 homes, several bridges, and 39,500 acres of farmland, Reuters reported.
It is estimated that flooding caused $280 million in damages.
