An Argentine tourist and Peruvian guide were killed in a mudslide Tuesday on the Inca trail near Machu Picchu in Peru, the Associated Press reported.
Dozens of tourists were evacuated by helicopter in the flood zone, where 2,000 more were reportedly still stranded.
Cuzco government spokesman Hernet Moscoso told the AP that the Argentine, identified as 23-year-old Lucia Ramallo, and the guide, Washington Huaraya, were in their tents when a slope gave way and their tents were crushed. Three other tourists were injured.
The deaths bring to five the number of people killed by five days of torrential rains in the Cuzco and Machu Picchu region, according to Moscoso.
Rail operator Perurail, which provides the only way to get to Machu Picchu from a given point, suspended service on Sunday due to mudslides and flooding of the Urubamba River, AP reported.
Perurail and the government were reportedly working to clear rocks and mud from the tracks so that service could resume Wednesday.
The deluge subsided Tuesday morning. Peru's rainy season traditionally lasts through March.
